The Benefit of Laughter Supports Arts and Movement

On Wednesday, March 12, more than 130 members of The Parkside School community gathered at Han Dynasty for The Benefit of Laughter, an evening dedicated to comedy, camaraderie, and philanthropy. Parents, teachers, therapists, staff, and friends came together to celebrate and support Parkside’s vibrant Arts and Movement Programs, raising $95,000.

The event, Parkside’s largest annual fundraiser, provided crucial funding for arts, music, drama, yoga, dance, and gym—programs that are essential to students' learning and development yet historically underfunded by the tuition rate set by the State Education Department. In addition, this year’s benefit helped secure new safety mats for the gym and improvements to the school’s stage, ensuring students have the resources they need to thrive.

The night was filled with laughter as guests enjoyed an improv comedy show by the Upright Citizens Brigade alongside a lively dinner and auction. The highlight of the evening was a special video produced by Julia Cassidy and Vanita Shastry, capturing the profound impact of the Arts and Movement Programs on Parkside students. The video, which resonated deeply with attendees, showcased how creativity, movement, and self-expression are central to the school’s mission.

The success of The Benefit of Laughter was made possible by the generosity of its sponsors. Select Equity Foundation served as the Diamond Sponsor, while Mary Elizabeth Alexander, The Rosen Family, and The Steingart Family contributed as Gold Sponsors. Silver Sponsors included Genimex Group, Riemer & Braunstein, LLP, and Dirk Vander Wilt and Emily Wang. The Holland Family supported as a Bronze Sponsor, and The Parkside Parents Association played a key role in the evening’s success. Not to mention the amazing benefit committee members who curated the evening. Thank you, Danit Almog, Stacy Basner, Claire Stevick and Ivy Venafro.

One of the most memorable aspects of the night was the unveiling of What Makes Me Laugh, a book featuring Parkside students’ reflections on what brings them joy. Adorned with charming photos and quotes, the book perfectly captured the spirit of the school and quickly became a treasured keepsake. Copies are available for purchase for $100, with proceeds helping to reach the event’s fundraising goal.

The evening was a resounding success, not just in dollars raised but in the outpouring of support from the Parkside community. With every bid, every donation, and every laugh shared, The Benefit of Laughter reinforced the power of community and the vital role of the arts in education. Thanks to the generosity of attendees and donors, Parkside students will continue to learn, explore, and grow in an environment that nurtures creativity and self-expression.
